Aniakchak National Monument & Preserve

On Alaska Peninsula, near Port Heiden

 

The Aniakchak Caldera covers 10 square mi and is one of the great dry calderas in the world. Located in the volcanically active Aleutian Mountains, the Aniakchak last erupted in 1931. Inside the crater are lava flows, cinder cones, and explosion pits, as well as Surprise Lake, the source of the Aniakchak River, which cascades through a 1,500-foot gash in the crater wall. The site also contains the Aniakchak Wild River. The site was proclaimed a national monument in 1978 and established as a national monument and preserve in 1980.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Fishing, float trips, wildlife watching. Tips & Hints: Bring wool clothing, rubber boots, and good rain gear. Bring all food if camping, and be sure tents can withstand bad weather: the caldera is subject to violent windstorms. Busiest Aug. and Sept., least crowded Jan. and Feb.

Camping: Backcountry camping only.  Hotels: None in park. FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

Free. Backcountry permits available from Aniakchak office in King Salmon. Alaska state fishing license required. Park open daily.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

Regular flights are available from Anchorage to King Salmon. Regular and charter flights are available from King Salmon to Port Heiden, a 10-mi hike over open tundra from the monument. Closest airport: Port Heiden.
