Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site

Near San Francisco, in Danville

 

Eugene O'Neill, the architect of modern American theater and the only Nobel Prize-winning playwright from the United States, lived at Tao House from 1937 to 1944. Here he wrote his final and most successful plays: The Iceman Cometh, Long Days Journey Into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten. Since 1980, the National Park Service has been restoring Tao House and its courtyard and orchards. Reservations are required for park visits, including free transportation to the park and a free guided tour of the home and courtyard. The site was authorized on October 12, 1976.

Facilities: Visitor center, bookstore. Programs & Events: On-site plays in May, June, and Sept. Tips & Hints: Best time to visit is Mar-May and Sept. and Oct. Busiest Apr-June, least crowded in Dec. Stairs only to second floor.

HOW TO GET THERE

Danville is 26 mi east of San Francisco off 1-680 in San Ramon Valley. Directions to the park shuttle pick-up site are when making reservations. Closest airport: Oakland (20 mi).
