Kobuk Valley National Park

In northwestern Alaska, near Kotzebue

 

Located 26 mi above the Arctic Circle, this 1.8-million-acre park preserves the central Kobuk River valley, the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, and the Little Kobuk and Hunt rivers. Here are the northernmost limits of the boreal forest, as well as caribou, wolf, fox, and grizzly and black bear. The site was proclaimed a national monument in 1978 and redesignated in 1980.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Backpacking, boating, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, rafting, wildlife watching. Facilities: Information center and park headquarters in Kotzebue. No facilities in park. Sales area. Programs & Events: Interpretive talks and demonstrations (Kotzebue; June-Aug.). Junior Ranger Program (June-Aug.). Tips & Hints: Prepare to be self-sufficient. Wear sturdy hiking boots and waders for wet terrain. Expect high winds throughout the year and short, cool, and sunny summers with 24 hours of daylight in June. Winters are long, dark, and extremely cold. Guard against hypothermia, giardiasis, wild animals, mosquitoes, and biting flies. Don't interfere with subsistence camps, fishnets, or other equipment. Respect property and privacy. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Dec. and Jan.

Free. Park open daily. Information center open mid-May-mid-Sept., daily 8-6.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

Kotzebue is 26 mi north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. Access to Kotzebue (headquarters and information center) is by Alaska Airlines. To reach the park, air taxis and scheduled and charter flights are available. In summer, access is by motorized and nonmotorized water-craft, aircraft, and foot. In winter, access is by snowmobile and aircraft.
