Manzanar  National Historic Site

In eastern California, near Independence

A reminder of an ugly episode in U.S. history, the remains of the Manzanar War Relocation Center have been designated a Historic Site. Manzanar was one of 10 camps at which Japanese-American citizens and resident aliens were forcibly interned after the attack on Pearl Harbor, for the duration of World War II. In the process, most Japanese-Americans lost their homes and businesses. Located at the foot of the imposing Sierra Nevada in eastern California's Owens Valley, Manzanar is one of the best preserved of these camps. The camp auditorium is being restored, a guard tower is being reconstructed, and a mess hall has been returned to the site. An interpretive center is due to open in the auditorium in fall 2004. The site was authorized on March 3, 1992.
