The monument commemorates the hardships and sacrifices of Japanese Americans interned on-site here during World War II. Hunt Camp, as it was called during the war, operated from August 1942 until October 1945. It comprised 33,000 acres with 600 buildings. About 13,000 internees from Washington, Oregon, and Alaska were held here. The monument preserves a portion of the camp s original acreage and buildings. It was authorized on January 17, 2001.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Touring site; viewing spud cellar, foundations, ornamental rock garden, entrance station. Tips & Hints: The park is under development. There's no visitor center, and some of the camp buildings are on private property. Call 208/837^793 before visiting. Summer temperatures average at about 87°F. Visit in spring or fall for best weather.

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

Free. Monument open daily dawn-dusk. Collection of artifacts, rocks, plants, animals, or any other object within the National Monument is prohibited.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

From Boise take 1-84 southwest for about 120 mi to Exit 173 at the intersection of 1-84 and U.S. 93. Go north on U.S. 93 for 5 mi, then head east on Rte. 25 for 9 mi, then north on Hunt Rd. for about 2 mi. The park is 21 mi east of Jerome and 17 mi northeast of Twin Falls. Closest airports: Twin Falls and Boise.
