On San Juan Island
Commemorated in this park are the 1853-72 events relating to the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute between the United States and Great Britain. In 1859, military forces from both countries confronted each other in a crisis precipitated by the nations' dual claims to the island and the death of a Hudson's Bay Company pig at the hands of an American farmer. On view are remains of American and British camps. The island is also home to glacial landscapes with grasslands, forests, beaches, tide pools, and lagoons. The park was authorized in 1966.
