Whitman Mission National Historic Site
In southeastern Washinton, near Walla Walla
Marcus and Narcissa Whitman founded a Protestant mission here in 1836 to convert the Cayuse people to Christianity and provide a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers. In 1847, a measles epidemic killed half the Cayuse. The survivors blamed Marcus Whitman for his inability to cure the measles and killed him, his wife, and 11 others on November 29, 1847. Another 50 hostages were ransomed a month later by agents from the Hudson's Bay Company. The site was authorized in 1936 and renamed in 1963.
