"This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world," declared conservationist John Muir when describing this grove of majestic coastal redwoods. The forest of towering trees and canyon ferns is a wonderfully tranquil place. Other park attractions are the redwood forest, Redwood Creek, wildflowers, and forest wildlife. The site was proclaimed on January 9, 1908.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Hiking, viewing wildlife, walking. Facilities: Visitor center, trails. Programs & Events: Ranger talks. Seasonal activities available. Earth Day (Jan.), Summer Solstice Celebration (June), Winter Solstice Celebra-tion (Dec). Tips & Hints: Park is cool, shaded, and moist year-round. Visit early or late in the day to avoid peak crowd times. Busiest June-Aug., least crowded Dec. and Jan.

Camping: None in park. In Mill Valley: Pantoll Campground (Mount Talmapais State Park, 801 Panoramic Hwy., tel. 415/388-2070; 16 sites; $12; flush toilets).  Hotels: None in park. FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

Entrance fee: $3 adults, free ages 16 and under. No pets on trails. No bikes. No picnicking. No portable radios. No RV parking. No vehicles over 35 feet long on steep, winding road leading to monument. Park open daily 8-sunset.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

12 mi north of the Golden Gate Bridge via U.S. 101 and Rte. 1. Closest airport: San Francisco.
