Lassen Volcanic National Park
In northeastern California, near Mineral
All four types of volcanoes in the world are found in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Lassen Peak, possibly the world's largest plug dome volcano, erupted in May 1914 and was active through 1921. Today the park has bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles, great lava pinnacles, lava flows, and jagged craters. Two great mountain ranges, the Sierra Nevada and Cascades, intersect with the Great Basin lava flows at the park, and flora and fauna from both ranges intermingle here. Much of the park is inaccessible from late fall to mid-spring because of heavy snow. At this writing, a new visitor center was under construction, due to open in fall 2006. The new center will have interpretive exhibits, space for films and lectures, a restaurant, and more. The park was established on August 9, 1916.
