NS Pearl Harbor Navy Base in Oahu, HI Hawaii Military Bases
NS Pearl Harbor – also referred to as Pu’uloa among the natives – is by far the most important base in the history of American wars. It is actually the reason for which the United States have decided to join World War II, after the famous attacks conducted by the Empire of Japan on December, 7-th, 1941. The station is among the largest bases in the world. Its services are easily comparable to a huge city. For instance, over 2.5M passengers go through it every year, as well as 200K vehicles on over 65K boat runs. The base is located west to Honolulu, in Hawaii.
Although the construction was finished earlier, the base was open in 1908. It took three years for the first warship to get in the base, in 1911 – USS California. Things changed a lot since then. The place is now the most common pit stop in the Pacific Ocean and not just for boats and warships, but also for any types of submarines. The first submarines arrived there in 1914. The first decades saw the base as nothing but a receiving station.
Prior to the famous attacks, the US and Japan had less important conflicts over the different opinions over China. The Empire of Japan allied with the Nazi forces of Germany and took over the entire Indochina. The move was not too popular in the US, since the Americans had other plans for that part of the world. As a result, they canceled all the shipments to Japan. Poor in resources, Japan placed an embargo on the areas of China rich in resources. At the same time, the US constantly sent shipments to China and increased the military resistance in the area.
The story is presented differently in all the Hollywood productions these days. The fact is that the Pearl Harbor attacks were asked for. On December, 7-th, 1941, hundreds of planes left Japan with bombs and torpedoes. The whole attack took less than 2 hours. Hundreds of ships and aircrafts were destroyed in the very successful Japanese raid. At the same time, over 2400 troops were killed.
Ever since then, NS Pearl Harbor hasn’t been involved in any major operations. It is a common pit stop in the area, but this is it. It still lives in the shadow of the harsh attacks suffered in the last century.
The housing system is very important and diversified, mostly because of the size of this base. The longterm inhabitants will most likely get a home from the army. Although it is not free, the overall costs are light and insignificant. Those who are dispatched there for short periods of time can opt for an army based housing system or a hotel. The citizens who are unable to find a home fast can also choose the privatized system at NS Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The prices are usually higher, but the conditions are definitely better.
The facilities are more than anyone could need and come to satisfy everyone’s necessities, soldiers or civilians.
