Situated beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point is a classic example of the coastal fortifications constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the mid-19th century. Built prior to the beginning of the Civil War, the brick-and-granite fort embodies the commercial and strategic military importance of San Francisco. Between 1933 and 1937 the fort was used as a base of operations for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. During World War II, Fort Point was occupied by 100 soldiers with searchlights and rapid-fire cannon as part of the protection of a submarine net strung across the bay entrance. The site was established on October 16, 1970.
