Nez Perce culture, traditions, and history are commemorated and  celebrated in this park's 38 sites, which are located in four states.  Sites range from small roadside pullouts to village sites and  battlefields. The Nez Perce National Historic Trail follows the route  the Nez Perce took in the 1877 War and runs from the Wallowa Valley of  northeast Oregon to Bear Paw Battlefield in north-central Montana. The  park was authorized on May 15, 1965.     
WHAT TO SEE & DO     
Fishing, picnicking, walking, watching film, wildlife viewing.  Facilities: 2 visitor centers: in Spalding, ID, and at Big Hole National  Battlefield {see separate entry), near Wisdom, MT; trails, museums,  interpretive display boards. Book and map sales areas, picnic tables.  Programs & Events: Tours and walks (by reservation, tel.  208/843-2261 Ext. 199). Guided hikes, interpretive talks, cultural  demonstrations (mid-May-Sept., weekends). Commemorations of Nez Perce  War of 1877 (White Bird, June 17; Big Hole, Aug. 6; Bear Paw, Oct. 5).  Tips & Hints: Allow plenty of time to visit 38 sites that stretch  1,500 mi. Be prepared for extreme changes in climate and elevation.  Busiest in May and Aug., least crowded in Nov. and Feb.

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS     
Free. Idaho state fishing license required. Nez Perce  Reservation permit required for steelhead fishing. Leashed pets only. No  hunting. Spalding unit open during daylight. Spalding visitor center  open June-Sept., daily 8-5:30; Oct.-May, daily 8-4:30.     
HOW TO GET THERE     
Spalding visitor center is 10 mi east of Lewiston on U.S. 12/95. Closest airport: Lewiston.
